They’re good enough, they’re certainly respected enough and everyone seems to like them. But when it comes to playing in Slam finals, they seem to play scared. Read More

Riding the Wave of Stolen Opportunities
Thu, Nov 13, 2008
Draw 4 at the Masters of Curling has been intriguing, beginning with Kerry Burtnyk short on lives and lean on execution after two big losses to Glenn Howard and Randy Ferbey in their opening matches.

So behind the 8-ball and needing a win to realistically stay alive, Burtnyk opened the game by posting another disastrous end (4 points this time), and falling behind to the young Mike McEwen rink early. Read More

Day 1 at the Masters a Howard Redux
Wed, Nov 12, 2008
The new season of Grand Slams opened tonight, and there’s a lot of new exciting announcements by Capital One to discuss, and one recurring them from last year.

The Million Dollar Button has been announced, and is a very exciting opportunity for some curler out there to make a bundle by hitting the button. For those of you who think hitting the button might be tough, the winner will walk away with a minimum of $1,000 for getting there, and increasing values up to $100,000 for just hitting the four foot. Waterloo Looks to Host Another Class Event
Mon, Oct 20, 2008
The Kitchener-Waterloo Granite club has stepped up for the third year in a row, to host a top calibre event at the Waterloo Memorial Rec Complex, and I’m looking forward to another stellar event.

Having attended both the December 2006 Masters of Curling held there and the Ontario Men’s Provincial Championship last winter, I saw how much work the local committee put in, and was very excited to hear this year’s Masters would be back in my home province, in the very competent committee in Waterloo. Booked to St. John’s, and then back again.
Sat, Apr 19, 2008
John Epping, the new second on Wayne Middaugh’s team has been racking up the airmiles this weekend, having made the trip to Newfoundland twice already this weekend.

Epping was noticeably absent last evening in the B Qualifier game in which Middaugh defeated Mike McEwen on Friday evening. Fan favourite Jamie Korab donned the Middaugh colours, with Scott Bailey moving up to second.

Epping was forced to return home due to a Friday morning work meeting that he couldn’t get out of, though was back Saturday evening in for the Quarterfinals. Read More

Cinderella’s Glass Slipper
Sat, Apr 19, 2008
It’s been a topsy-turvy week here in St. John’s, NL at the Women’s event of the Tylenol® Players Championship, with all the early favourites falling and the young guns stepping up.

The Semifinal matchups feature the 6th seed battling 11th seed and , 15th and 16th seeds in the other game. The teams you ask? Cheryl Bernard of Calgary, Alberta is 6, Krista (you might know her as Scharf) McCarville of Thunder Bay is 11, and Amber Holland of Saskatoon (15) and Eve Belisle of Montreal (16) round out the Final Four.

With the matchups, we’re going to have one of the bottom two seeds in this 16 team event playing probably the biggest match of their lives later this afternoon (3pm EDT on CBC Network) in the Championship Final. Read More

Bad Chicken and The Awards
Fri, Apr 18, 2008
It’s been a rough week this far for curling’s bad-boy of rock, John Morris, as he’s been under the weather and almost didn’t play the team’s first game on Thursday morning.

While thoughts of overdoing it may have come to mind, I will set the record straight that Morris has been battling a bad bought of food poisoning. “Bad Chicken Salad Sandwich”, Morris called it.

Also taking place on Thursday evening was the World Curling Tour Players’ Awards Banquet hosted in the main ballroom at the Fairmont Newfoundland. Read More

New Teams and Alternate Realities
Thu, Apr 17, 2008
With the season coming to close team changes begin to happen, and people’s vacation time has been budgeted and used up. Not everyone on a team can play at any given time, and therefore spares are often lined up to fill spots on the team.

Results can be varied when bringing in a new body to the team on the ice, though generally it does take some games before a team can get comfortable. Read More

The Women’s have taken to the ice at the 2008 Tylenol® Players’ Championship, and the rust is slowly being shaken off by the competitors.

Many of these teams haven’t played a highlevel competitive event in a couple months, and it showed in the early struggles. Jennifer Jones of Winnipeg, Manitoba and Shannon Kleibrink of Calgary both dropped their first games in big upsets. Read More

From the Worlds to the Players Championship….. The Travels Continue!

It was a great week at the World Championship held the last week, in which Kevin Martin proved he could win what many consider the biggest title.

But what Kevin has often referred to as the toughest title to win, and the one he considers the most prestigious is the next event on the calendar: The Tylenol Players Championship held this year in St. John’s, Newfoundland/Labrador. Read More

Farewell at the End of the Season
Tue, Jan 15, 2008
Good afternoon everyone - this is a hard note to write on a couple of topics/

Secondly, it is a message I knew would come some day and today is the day, that after my 6 years plus a member of this organization, and each day for me has been a privilage and honor of mine to work on behalf of all players - my effort is going to come to an end at the end of this season. A Week to Remember

What a week in Quebec City . My wife, Shauna and I were treated fabulously during our stay.

The week started with a curling clinic at the Victoria Curling Club. Marc, Jules and I were joined by Pierre Charette and Bill Tschirhart in teaching the clinic. There were 34 curlers on the three sheets at the club. Read More

During the BDO Canadian Open I am going to write a daily blog talking to you about the event, the players and maybe some behind the scenes stories. There are always a few good stories during a Tour event in Curling. The curlers are always good for that.
