Middaugh blazes early trail; fends off Simmons surge Source: WCT
Wayne Middaugh is back with a vengeance, in an Olympic year where he is on the outside looking in.
Middaugh’s new-look squad, featuring cousin and former Russ Howard teammate Peter Corner at third, defeated a streaking Pat Simmons of Moose Jaw, Sask. 8-6 in the championship final of The National, the first of four Grand Slam of Curling events this season.
It was Middaugh’s third outright victory in four tournament attempts this fall, and it comes as attention is clearly focussed on the Olympic Trials in Halifax Dec. 3-11, which Middaugh’s old foursome failed to qualify for.
After an opening single, Simmons missed a runback and Middaugh stole two for a 3-0 lead. Simmons fought back with a deuce and steal of his own for the tie, and Middaugh followed with a deuce which he nursed the rest of the way. -- Click to Read More |
