JOHN'S, April 17, 2008 - Cheryl Bernard (Calgary, Alta.), Cathy King (Edmonton, Alta.) and Eve Bélisle (Montreal, Que.) each secured a berth in the women's quarterfinals at the TYLENOL® Players' Championship today following the conclusion of the second day of the season's final Capital One Grand Slam of Curling event at the Mile One Centre in St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador.
In the men's draw, reigning World Champion Kevin Martin (Edmonton, Alta.) moved to 2-0 with a 7-2 victory over Greg McAulay (Richmond, B.C.). Joining Martin at 2-0 after the first four draws are 2007 World Champion Glenn Howard (Coldwater, Ont.), Kevin Koe (Edmonton, Alta.) and Pat Simmons (Davidson, Sask.).
Howard picked up his second victory of the event by edging past four-time TYLENOL® Players' Champion Wayne Middaugh (Midland, Ont.) 6-4. Koe remained unbeaten by ousting Mike McEwen (Winnipeg, Man.) 7-3 while Simmons improved his record to 2-0 with a 7-6 extra end result over Kerry Burtnyk (Winnipeg, Man). JOHN'S, April 16, 2008 - Michelle Englot (Regina, Sask.) and Sherry Anderson (Saskatoon, Sask.) became the first two skips to secure a berth in the women's quarterfinals at the TYLENOL® Players' Championship this evening after both teams swept their first three matches during the opening day of the season's final Capital One Grand Slam of Curling event at the Mile One Centre in St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador.
In men's action, reigning Olympic gold medallist Brad Gushue (St. John's, Nfld.) dropped his opening round match to Greg McAulay (Richmond, B.C.) by a score of 8-5. Leading 4-3 heading into the sixth end, McAulay capitalized on a Gushue miscue to scored three points en route to an insurmountable 7-3 advantage.
Newly crowned World Champion Kevin Martin (Edmonton, Alta.) recorded a default victory over Martin Ferland (Cap-de-la-Madeleine, Que.) this evening after a flight delay into Montreal caused the Quebec-based squad to miss their connecting flight to St. John's.
