THE "HOWARD RULE"
|
| The 2004 National introduces the "Howard Rule" to the PharmAssist Grand Slam of Curling presented by M&M Meat Shops. The "Howard Rule" is a slight variation of the four-rock free guard zone rule. It extends the free guard zone to include the rings as well. Any opposition rock that comes to rest in play (between the hog line and back line) cannot be removed until the fifth rock of the end.
The rule has been named after the Howard brothers, Glenn and Russ, who brought attention to it by using it in practice when they used to form one of the greatest back-ends Ontario and the rest of the curling world has ever seen. The rule has been used in the past to rave reviews, and is sure to provide even more action and excitement than the usual aggressive play the four-rock free guard zone already employs. |
